Damascus Steel Damasteel – Luxury Damascus Steel Pens
The Secret of Swedish Damasteel Steel
In Sweden they know how to manufacture high-quality mobile phones, safe cars, practical designer furniture and fashion – and they also excel in blacksmithing and steel processing. Thanks to the steel industry, Sweden has developed in many ways into a modern and internationally competitive country. The methods of producing the highest quality steel are mastered to perfection, just like the technique of forge welding – layering two types of steel into seven sheets, a process that has been developed and refined for many years. The result is high-quality Damascus steel, whose production requires exceptional blacksmith craftsmanship and represents the pinnacle of traditional steelworking.
Damascus Steel Tradition in Söderfors
Steel processing in Sweden is particularly concentrated in the northern Uppland region, where many villages are famous for their iron and steel production. In 1676, anchors began to be manufactured at a mill in Söderfors using a new welding technique that made the final products much stronger and of higher quality than anything previously forged there. Several steelworks quickly developed in the village. Some of them, including Scana Steel and Erasteel, still continue the steelmaking tradition of Söderfors today.
The Birth of Damasteel® Damascus Steel
It was the company Erasteel that initiated a collaboration in 1992 which led to the creation of a new company and the acquisition of an international patent. Per Billgren from Erasteel and the blacksmith and knifemaker Kaj Embretsen developed a method for producing highly alloyed patterned Damascus steel using powder metallurgy. After winning the “Innovation of the Year” award at the EPMA conference in Paris in 1994, steps were taken to establish the company Damasteel®. Today Damasteel® is the youngest steel company in the renowned Söderfors area, which has more than 300 years of steelmaking tradition. The local blacksmiths are known for their expertise and deep experience in steel production and design, as confirmed by the international patent for patterned Damascus steel.
Modern Powder Metallurgy and Stainless Damascus Steel
Through modern powder metallurgy, Damasteel® is able to produce even stainless Damascus steel – something that is virtually impossible in traditional forges. The more stainless the steel needs to be, the more carbon the manufacturing process requires. The melting point of steel is 1539 °C, while the melting point of carbon reaches an incredible 3642 °C. Such temperatures cannot be achieved in a traditional blacksmith’s forge, which usually reaches a maximum of about 1300–1400 °C. Even a blast furnace in the Škoda steelworks reaches “only” around 1800 °C. The Swedish simply know how to do it, and that is why high-quality Damascus steel is forged in Sweden and exported all over the world.
This stainless, exceptionally strong and durable Damascus steel with its beautiful pattern is also ordered by Michal Čiliak for the production of his luxury handmade pens.
Limited Edition Damascus Steel Pens – 2020
2020 “It was a long journey, but it was definitely worth it! The first limited edition of truly luxurious pens from my workshop has been created. For their production I used the unmistakable and exceptionally high-quality Damascus steel from the Swedish brand Damasteel®. No one produces Damascus steel better than the blacksmiths at Damasteel®. Only a few pens made from this material will appear in my collection, because these are truly exclusive products designed for exceptional customers. I also plan to introduce series made from classic stainless steel and bronze, which will be more accessible but still aimed at customers who appreciate unique and extraordinary products.”
Fenja Edition Damascus Steel Pens – 2021
2021 “The new Fenja Edition 2021 is finally here! Sometimes even I am surprised how long it takes to complete this project, but the production process of these exceptional pens is simply demanding and quite complex. It does not depend only on me – for example, the production of the Damascus steel rods from Swedish Damasteel® took three months this time, because the Fenja rod design was a brand-new development when I ordered it.
In fact, every stage of the manufacturing process takes weeks or months, since not everything happens in my workshop. Many parts travel across the Czech Republic and visit specialists for processes such as heat treatment and other technical steps required for production. The great thing is that, apart from forging the Damascus rods themselves, these pens are essentially a Czech product, and I can finally present 15 first-class pens for the most demanding customers.”
