How to Choose a Pen and the Right Pen Box

The smallest detail can make the biggest difference. To make that difference as positive as possible, in this article we will look at how to choose a wooden pen and the right pen box. We will focus mainly on wood – its properties, types, advantages and disadvantages offered by different kinds of wood.

Stylish gentlemen know that the right combinations and details are extremely important. Every elegant lady knows this as well. Accessories are often just as important as the rest of the outfit. A seemingly small detail can ruin the overall impression – or, on the contrary, elevate it to a whole new level. Which pen should you choose to enhance your style even further, and which box is the best match for a wooden pen? The following lines will give you the answer.

There is an unwritten rule that the colour of your leather shoes, belt and even your watch strap should match – ideally also the leather of your briefcase or bag. The belt should match the shoes in colour, possibly also the bag or wallet. It does not have to be exactly the same shade, but it should not differ dramatically. And if you truly care about details, a carefully selected wooden pen together with an elegant box can bring the entire look to perfection.

Leather case or wooden box?

All pens from my workshop are treated with several layers of high-quality hard wax oil and are washable, so you can choose according to your taste without worrying about lighter wood shades. It is worth ordering the pen together with a box, which represents an additional protective layer. In my offer you will find not only leather pen cases but also oak and beech wooden pen boxes. Both are made from solid wood and, besides protecting the pen, they also serve as a stylish desk stand. I would also like to mention that I can engrave both the boxes and the cases for you, helping you create an even more personal gift that leaves a lasting impression.

Beech wood pen box

I recommend pairing it with pens made from light or light-brown wood species, or with the exotic wood Padauk. Beech wood is hard, relatively rigid and quite strong. Its colour ranges from light brown to slightly pinkish, but after oil treatment it gains a darker characteristic tone. The wood is uniform and dense. Engraving of your message or name stands out beautifully on a beech box.

Oak wood pen box

Ideal for pairing with pens made from dark brown woods and also with Czech plum wood. Oak boxes are extremely durable and resistant. The main characteristics of oak wood are hardness, strength, toughness and long-term durability. Among European woods it is one of the most resistant to moisture and environmental changes. An oak pen box is elegant and timeless, and it also provides an excellent surface for engraving names, messages or dedications.

Leather pen case

Besides wooden boxes, you can also choose a leather case that is handmade directly in Pilsen. The range includes several colours – from dark brown through lighter shades to black or even pink. A leather pen case is more practical when you need to carry your pen from place to place and do not want to take a wooden box with you. I can also engrave initials, short messages or dedications on the leather case.

Which type of wood should you choose?

In my workshop I work with more than 20 types of wood. You can choose from a selection of light and dark brown shades and decide whether you prefer wood from European forests or exotic species such as the dark African wengé or the reddish-brown African padauk. Almost any combination is possible – it depends purely on your taste or the taste of the person you are choosing the pen for.

Very light or light brown woods:

yew, ash, oak, apple, pear, olive wood, cherry

Dark brown woods:

walnut, wengé

Warm brown shades:

padauk, plum
